Net-Zero Lab at Sofia University has launched a new educational initiative, “Informed Consumer Choice,” aimed at raising public awareness and energy literacy among Bulgarian households in light of the ongoing liberalization of the electricity market.
Through a series of short educational videos, the campaign provides accessible and expert-backed information about how the electricity market works, what liberalization entails, and how it may affect consumers. The first two videos in the series are now live and cover the following topics:
- “What Is a Liberalized Electricity Market?”
- “How Will Liberalization Affect Household Electricity Prices?”
The videos are available on Net-Zero Lab’s Knowledge Box.
Further content will be released in the coming weeks, including practical advice for consumers on how and when to change suppliers, as well as dedicated resources for vulnerable and energy-poor households.

The initiative builds on a recent public discussion organized by Net-Zero Lab in June, “The Missing Debate on Liberalization,” which concluded that although the full liberalization has been temporarily postponed, it remains inevitable. The key message:
‘Liberalization is postponed, but not canceled – preparation must not stop.‘
“This campaign aims to serve as a bridge between knowledge and society – especially in processes that require conscious action and critical thinking,” said Dr. Mariya Trifonova, Deputy Director of Net-Zero Lab during the event.
The campaign is part of Net-Zero Lab’s long-term mission to support a just and informed energy transition. The lab puts consumers at the center of the energy system – not as passive bill payers, but as active participants.
