Net-Zero Lab at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is organizing a conference on October 21, 2025, at Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia, dedicated to Bulgaria’s innovation potential in strategic energy technologies.
Bulgaria ranks among the last in Europe in terms of innovation capacity, yet it has the potential to establish itself as a leader in specific niches of research and development. As a participant in the European Union’s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan), Bulgaria can accelerate the development and large-scale deployment of key low-carbon energy technologies.
Overcoming systemic regulatory, technical, and coordination barriers is a key prerequisite for realizing this potential—whose limits are already being explored through flagship projects in digital solutions, energy storage, and green fuels.
To further advance this dialogue, Net-Zero Lab at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” will host a conference on October 21 at Grand Hotel Millennium, Da Vinci Hall 2, starting at 9:30 a.m. The event will bring together leading European experts, national institutions, academics, and business leaders to outline the framework for innovative development in energy technologies, present successful Bulgarian examples, and discuss recommendations for future growth.

In the discussion, we will seek answers to the following questions:
- What are the key challenges facing Bulgaria in deploying strategic energy technologies?
- Where does Bulgaria have a chance to stand out within Europe’s energy transition?
- What are the obstacles to establishing effective financing mechanisms for innovation projects?
- How can data centers be integrated to support the energy transition?
- What are the main trends in the adoption of hydrogen and other green fuels?
- Which policies could improve the country’s competitiveness in digital solutions, storage systems, waste-heat recovery, and the use of hydrogen in industry?
